    Key Highlights

    • Shares of AMD declined 3.72% Tuesday following reports that OpenAI fell short of its revenue and user expansion projections
    • The AI company maintains a supply agreement with AMD for data center hardware components
    • Year-to-date gains for AMD remain at approximately 49% following the recent decline
    • First quarter financial results arrive May 5; analysts project $1.28 earnings per share on $9.87B in sales
    • Current forward price-to-earnings ratio of 50 prompts valuation debates before the upcoming report

The chipmaker delivered record fourth quarter sales of $10.3 billion, representing 34% growth compared to the prior year period. Data center operations generated $5.4 billion during Q4, marking a 39% year-over-year increase. Multi-year GPU supply agreements with OpenAI and Meta Platforms remain in place.

    Market conditions shifted Tuesday.

Shares of AMD fell 3.72% following reports indicating OpenAI underperformed against its internal revenue and user growth benchmarks. The development concerned investors monitoring AI infrastructure expenditure patterns, particularly given OpenAI’s role as a major data center client.

The semiconductor sector experienced broader weakness. AMD had climbed nearly 25% during the previous week, momentarily reaching $350 and recording approximately 65% gains for April. Strong quarterly performances from Intel and Texas Instruments contributed to that momentum.

Tuesday’s trading volume reached approximately 29 million shares, modestly under the three-month average daily volume of 32.47 million.

    Quarterly Results Approaching

The company releases first quarter figures on May 5 following market close. Analyst consensus calls for adjusted earnings of $1.28 per share alongside revenue of $9.87 billion. Company guidance previously indicated Q1 sales near $9.8 billion, suggesting approximately 32% year-over-year expansion.

AMD has surpassed analyst projections during each of the previous eight reporting periods, establishing a pattern of outperformance. Intel’s first quarter revenue exceeded expectations by over $1 billion, potentially signaling favorable conditions for AMD.

CEO Lisa Su disclosed ongoing discussions with customers regarding multi-year deployment commitments involving Helios and MI450 products launching later in 2026. The company previously announced a 6-gigawatt Instinct GPU agreement with OpenAI alongside a comparable 6-gigawatt arrangement with Meta.

    Valuation Concerns Emerge

Despite solid operational performance, AMD’s current market pricing draws scrutiny. The stock commands a trailing price-to-earnings multiple exceeding 123 and a forward P/E near 50. These metrics appear elevated relative to historical semiconductor valuations.

Analyst consensus stands at Moderate Buy, derived from 19 Buy recommendations and 8 Hold ratings issued during the past three months. The average price target of $295.04 implies approximately 8% downside from present trading levels.

The semiconductor industry has experienced substantial appreciation during recent weeks. Current valuations embed expectations of prolonged, multi-year artificial intelligence infrastructure investment — though chip markets have historically displayed cyclical behavior patterns.

Any deceleration in cloud provider capital spending, or additional evidence suggesting AI implementation is trailing internal forecasts at major companies like OpenAI, could rapidly shift investor sentiment.

AMD’s latest closing price stood at $323.61, maintaining approximately 49% year-to-date appreciation despite Tuesday’s setback.
