Ok I got Redhat 7.2 from my schools ftp server and loaded it. (Don't have the manuals or anything) I have looked everywhere for this problem and I can't seem to find anything on it. I loaded linux everything went fine. The problem I am having is that when I go to log into linux there is no graphical login. Just says LocalHost: login or whatever. I type "root" and the password and it just brings up like a command prompt. I can use commands like cd .. and ls and see all of the files but I can't actually get into the OS itself. Would this be caused by my videocard or something (Geforce 4 mx440-se). Any help would be greatly apprectiated. I also try to get into the OS using a User name and pass that I added in the install and had no luck.

OK We have a few options here. First off it is better to log in as a user and not root. Some of these you may have to be root to do though.
init 5 is the command for multi user with a GUI.
First you need to set up a GUI .In RedHat7.3 you would type Xconfigurator when logged in as root and it would guide you through the process of setting up X. Did you install Gnome or KDE when you did your installation? You must have a window manager.
You need to know your moniter sync rates and your Graphics card memory ect
Your card will work I have a GeForce 2 mx 400.
If Xconfigurator wont work try Xfree86 config.
But you must have installed a window manager when you did your install. It should have asked for your graphics info then. If it did
just type startX and that will give you your default window manager
Good Luck
Ron

Yes I did install a graphics manager when I installed. Although at the beginning when I first put the cd in it said it could not probe the monitor or videocard. I did install KDE. When I type in startx it gives me a lot of errors about the NVidia chipset or something. I will try the XFree86 and the Xconfigurator and see where that gets me. Thanks a lot for your help.
