I have a small home lan with three windows computers and one linux computer. I've had the three windows computers running perfectly for a while and recently got a version of redhat 7.2 and was going to try it out. I have a linksys switch which my cable modem is connected to, that in turn gives my other four computers the internet.
the problem is my linux computer is not configured. I went and fooled around with network configuration in rh7.2 (i somewhat know what im doing) and the problem still says the same, my eth0 fails on startup and my linux never gets its ip address.
Can someone please tell me the steps for setting up a linux rh7.2 to run on a LAN. Also if anyone knows how to work with a linksys switch i would be grateful

Hi
I think better way for you is using
linuxconf utility with graphical interface (assuming you already have installed graphical desktop(s) like KDE or Gnome).linuxconf-**.rpm file you can find at second RH 7.2 CD.
Install it running in console:
rpm -i linuxconf-**-.rpm
or use Kpackage (gnorpm) utility
Run linuxconf in terminal window:
linuxconf
For DEC chip based ethernet adapters choose tulip driver ..If you have Plug&Play adapter you do not neeed to select i/o range and irq.
Enjoy.Sergiy.
P.S. Additionaly you may install other
services:squid - proxy server;
sendmail - mail server;
imap-2000 -(IMAP and POP protocols implementation for mail server);
..
apache - web server;
wu-ftp - ftp server;Run as root ntsysv to select background
services (daemons) to run automatically at startup.

There is a bugfixed for networking cards in
redhat 7.2 on www.redhat.com. If you
install this linux autodetect your network
card and gives it an ip. My question is how
do I configure a proxy server in rh 7.2 so
i can access the internet with my w2k
machine?

I have the same problem, but dmesg reports my card as a Xircom and this is an IBM etherjet, last night it was being recognized, but after rebooting wasn't recognized anymore.
