I have a Gateway Astro & need to setup XWindows using XConfigurator. It dectects video cards correctly and the Gateway AN1_15 monitor is listed as a option for monitor choices. After going through all this during a test start the screen goes black, but you can hear the system working to pull up the Sample GUI. I am trying to set the system up for use with GNOME.

Chances are the vertical and horizontal refresh rates are set wrong. Open a terminal window. Ctrl + Alt + F1 will get you to one. Login as root. cd /etc/X11 and edit the refresh rates in the XF86Config file to the true refresh rates of your monitor. Backup the file first in case you make a mistake. The "vi" editor will work in terminal mode. Just do a google search on vi to find out how to use it. After you have saved the edited file reboot.
