I am having problems getting my display to work properly on my HP Pavillion n5240 laptop after installing Red Hat Linux 9. The OS recognizes my s3 Savage/IX integrated video alright but cant seem to recognize the actual laptop display. It is currently running on Generic and as a result the GUI only appears on a central part of the screen. There is a surrounding black frame about 2cm on the display that is not being used. I attempted to fix the problem by setting the resolution and the Dpi without success in the System Settings -> Display. This is my first time ever using Linux and I would greatly appreciate any help that could be provided. Thanks =)

I once saw a computer which didn't get into the requested resolution, because of lack of video memory. You might want to try changing from displaying "millions of colors" to "thousands of colors" (or for trying out "256 colors") and then adjust the display resolution.

Don't know if it will work, but it's changing (and changing back) is not much trouble either.

Thanks for the response. I tried that already but it didnt work. Red Hat recognizes my s3 Savage/IX video just fine its my actual TFT display it doesnt like. I have already adjusted my resolution and color as the root user without success. What is happening is the actual GUI is being displayed on only the center of the display leaving a black border of unused pixels approximately 2cm all the way around. Ive already checked my BIOS for any relevant settings but everything seems ok there. If only I could get Red Hat 9 to see my TFT Display for what it is...

Any helpful info is appreciated.

What is the native resolution of the TFT
screen? 1024x768? Have you tried running at
that res? You may also have an auto-setup
button on your TFT which may help. Was
there an option in the BIOS to stretch the
display?
