Got a bit of the problem with the resources used by Red Hat 8.0's software Raid solution that makes the system crawl like a turtle with constant heart attacks.
I recently installed RAID 1 (mirroring) for 2x 9 gig Quantums under RH8 and since then, the HD light is always on. That wouldn't be a problem but in console mode, typing a command is happening in slow bursts and execution of them is even slower. If I start GNOME, the mouse movement is very choppy. System Monitor shows that raid1d and raid1syncd use up about 75-85% of the total CPU power. The system is a AMD 800Mz Duron with an Asus A7N266-VM motherboad including 512MB DDR266 RAM.
I tried to kill raid1syncd and raid1d, and when I succeded (kill -9 muhahaha they were still listed in System Monitor but in sleeping mode). Good thing was that the speed was back to normal. I also noticed that there was 3 of raid1d listed...I'm guessing if maybe it's one for each md?
If it helps, I have the following RAID partition created with DiskDruid:
/md0 109M /boot ext3
/md1 1027M swap (that's as close I could get to 1024 due to cylinder limitations of one of the HDs)
/md2 7468M / ext3Has anyone experienced similar problems? I wonder if it's Linux's Software RAID solution that requires these horrendous resources....or is something else happening in the background I am not aware of? Thanks, any help will be appreciated.
