Red Hat 7.3 kernel panic during install

Kenzo Yamada June 4, 2002 at 19:58:06 Pacific

Hi, I getting this when I try to install:

EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
cramfs: wrong magic
FAT: unable to read boot sector
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=09:00,
iso_blknum=16, block=32
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs
on 09:00

I've tried 3 different disk sets, all with
correct md5sums, and all already used to
install in other machines, which are
running RH 7.3, so I don't believe it's a
problem w/ the CDs. The computer that hangs
is an Athlon 1.1, 256MB RAM, SIS730 chipset and I m trying to install on hdb (30G). I have Red Hat 7.2 running on this same machine, same hdd,
w/out any problems ever. Any clues?

Thanks for any help!

I forgot to mention, but I have tried to
disable the cache in the BIOS setup, tried
to boot with several different floppies,
and the error message is always the same,
which leads me to believe that there must
be something in the new kernel that just
doesn t get along with my system. I read in
other fora that people who have encountered
this problem with older versions of the
kernel were able to boot their computers
using a different CD-ROM drive, others were
able to install from a HDD, but I ve tried
all of these, and the situation is always
the same. Any hints will be very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Try this : http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/
I had some problems with a SIS chip (RAID) and I was obliged to change the motherboard.
Good luck

I have tried to install RH 7.3 and run into this error off bootup and when running dosutils I get a different error siting that I need to name an appropriate image. I have installed XP first and have left 5 Gigs unpartitioned. How should I go about this?

Well, I have just the same problem. Seems
like I will never have RedHat 7.3. Because of
that problem. Just can't pass it by. And
beleave me, I have tryed to solve it several
ways. Well, if I at least knew that it is an
hardware problem! And what part (hardware
component) of my system was causing it, at
least I could do some thing. I am here
requesting help, 'cause I do want to have
redhat 7.3 runing gloryous on my system. My
system is a AMD K6-2 3d - 500 MHz With a
Riva TNT2, two hdds (20GB,3.4Gb), HP cdW,
MSI board (if you need the model just tell),
128MB Ram (I have tryed other sims), and
an ethernet LAN connection to the internet
throw some net-board, I have RedHat 7.1
and Windows ME on my system at the
moment. I wish I could get rid of both!
Please let me have 7.3. Please, help!

Some body... hello..o......o............o...

I seem to have the same problem, I have 256 meg ram , PC-chips integrated mainboard, duron 650 and two HD one seagate 20gb and one samsung 4.8gb.

It seems we all have AMD chips, does anyone has this problem with a Intel Chip ?

Also, I've known from a friend that this problem could be caused because linux is unable to determine exactly how much mem is there in the system , but running linux mem=256M dosn't seem to help :(

So if anyone has any ideas ....

One solution:

I have a AMD and an SIS board. I turned of Power management in the BIOS and now I can install RH7.3.

Turning off other stuff may also be necesary on your particular board.
