Why don't you just buy another modem? Or upgrade to cable/dsl connection!!

I'm not sure if your specific model can be made to work but check out these resources concerning PCTel "Winmodems":
http://www.linmodems.org/#vendor
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/
... good luck but I never went through the trouble of getting my winmodem to work - instead, if you have a second PC, it's easier to install Linux on that one and use your MS Windows PC as a proxy to share its Internet connection over to your Linux box via ethernet... it's not as hard as it sounds - post back if you want the details.

I have 3 or 4 versions of knoppix. I really like it and it detects everything but my modems.
I tried it on a laptop and it would not detect the winmodem.
I tried it on my Linux box and it would not detect my USR 5610B hardware modem.
I plugged in my externel modem to my laptop serial port and it would not detect it either.
I would aviod mandrake at all costs.
Get a hardware modem and install fedora or Suse. Then move on to Slackware or debian.
Those where knoppix 3.2 and 3.3 that I used.
Take Care
Ron
