Quick Redhat Question

OS: Redhat Linux
CPU/Ram: AMD K6 450 Mhz/256 MB
Product: Compaq Presario 5365
Comment:

I am interested in trying out RedHat Linux. But I have a couple of questions first:

1. Can Redhat be booted off of a live CD like other Linux Distros?

2. I know that Redhat can either come with KDE or Gnome. Is there a way to tell which one it comes with or is the only way to find out is to download it and try it? (I prefer KDE.)

3. I found a download mirror site containing ISO's for every Redhat version, but some of the later versions come with 3 ISO's! (Labeled Disc 1, Disc 2, and Disc 3) Each ISO is ~650 MB. Is Redhat really that big?

Thanks for any responses!

-Trent

"I prefer KDE"

Hardware requirements

Desktop / Required RAM / Required CPU

fluxbox/idesk / 48MB / 100 MHz
XFCE4 / 128MB / 200 MHz
Gnome 1.x / 256MB / 500 MHz
Gnome 2.x / 384MB / 800 MHz
KDE 3.x / 512MB / 1 GHz

"These values are general rules of thumb. KDE will start on computer systems who should have been moved to museums long ago, like a Pentium 100 with 64 MB RAM, but it will run horribly slow."

"For a hot new box with lots of RAM and a fast CPU I recommend KDE 3.x or Gnome 2.x. Gnome is bloated and KDE is even more bloated. This is great, but all those fancy features demand more CPU and ram."

arochester, the latest version is Redhat 9, which is also out of date. I am interested in the older, original versions of Redhat because they will run on my machine better than the fedora based ones.

jam, i know KDE and Gnome are power gluttons, but Redhat 9 requires 400 Mhz and 192 MB, which the compaq exceeds. (Just barely!)

I'm not sure what version of KDE Redhat 9 uses, but I would like to try it with KDE 2.x . If it comes with KDE 3.x, i'll try an older version of Redhat.

Now, what about the 3 ?'s I asked.

Thanks for the info, though you two.

Does the Redhat installer actually ask you if you want to use it with KDE or Gnome?

I just don't understand why you insist on trying to run OS's that will run poorly with your system specs.

BTW, it looks like you went back to Win98SE again...what happened? I thought you said Win2K was running perfectly & you weren't going to change it?

Jam, what the hell to you care?!? This is my test computer and I will put any OS on it that I want to! I don't need your negative comments, that have nothing to do with the questions I have asked, which I have got from you ever since I joined Computing.net!

OK, fine. I should have stuck with what I stated in the Win2K forum. You will get no further help from me.
