I use Redhat linux 6.2 on a machine w/ a k6 3
400mhz cpu, 220megs of ram and a voodoo
banchee 16mb video card. Linux uses all these
devices to thier full capacity, and
everything runs well except for quake 3. When
I try and play, it's so choppy you can hardly
get through the startup screen. I checked all
my sys information and made sure linux
recognized my ram, processor, was using the
right video card drivers, and it's all fine.
I even tried running the game in failsafe and
there's no improvement, so it can't be the
desktop environment. I dual boot with windows
millenium, and quake 3 runs excellent when
i'm on windows. Why can I not run this game
on linux?

Don't use quake with KDE or any of the other window managers which use lots of resources.
Try using a light windows manager like KFCE
