I am having problem with a PS/2 mouse on ECS 651-M motherboard.

I'm building 1000 systems and 800 systems are using ECS 845GV-M3 motherboard. The other 200 systems are using ECS 651-M motherboard. Everything else are the same. (CPU, memory, peripherals, Fedora Core 3 installation, etc).

I don't find any problems at all on ECS 845GV-M3 motherboard systems, but all 200 of ECS 651-M motherboard systems have exactly the same problem. The PS/2 mouse does not work. Under X, I would see the mouse cursor, but I can't move it, nor I can't click. The reason I know I can't click is that I tried right click, and nothing happens. I tried middle & left nothing happens. I thought the 3 button emulation might be the problem. I tried with 2 button mice and 3 button mice but still nothing.

Here's what I tried to do to debug it.

1. Originally I have Fedora Core 3 installed, and the mouse, somehow, was not working, although it was detected. I thought there might be problems on the PS/2 mouse port or the mouse itself, so I tried installing Windows XP on it. Everything, including the mouse works fine. So I know that it's not hardware problem.

2. I wanted to make sure that the mouse works OS other than Windows. I then downloaded and tried a small OS that I know (MenuetOS). It's a small OS that's written in assembly, and has GUI. The mouse works on MenuetOS as well.

3. I then downloaded and tried Slackware Live CD (Slax). Same thing as in Fedora happens. X starts and there's mouse cursor in the middle, and I can't move it at all. The mouse was detected. The reason I know this is that there's a line that says "kernel: mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice". There's a link on /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux. I tried everything I can think of, but it still won't work.

4. As last resouce, I tried pluggin USB mouse, still under Slax. The USB mouse was detected, and I retried X. Initially the USB mouse is not working. But I tried by clicking on one button, and then it works .... PS/2 mouse, although still connected is still not working.

I could have resolved the problem by switching to USB mouse, but since I have the large quantities of PC, I want to make all of them having the same thing, so that the user won't have to remember which PC uses USB mouse, and which using PS/2. I need to get the PS/2 mouse working. I'm all out of ideas ... Help please .....

I found out that using Kernel 2.6.x I am experiencing this problem. I tried 2.6.11 (Slax), and 2.6.9 (Fedora Core 3). I tried 2.4 kernel my PS/2 mouse works ...

I found this article http://kerneltrap.org/node/1587 which explains some problems with mouse code on 2.6 kernel. Eventhough my problem is not exactly like what they described, I tried pasing psmouse_noext=1 which they said will make 2.6 kernel mouse works closes as 2.4 kernel, but still not working ....

Anyone got suggestions?

I had problems with my mouse on X (Fedora Core 3), as well, when I wasn't running the "gpm" daemon (text-based mouse support). For some reason, the mouse works fine in the gui when the text mouse daemon is loaded, but otherwise ...

Enter "service gpm status" at a command prompt to see if is currently loaded. [You can run "ntsysv" (text-based) or "system-config-services" (gui version) to set it to load at boot.]

I just tested it, and if I unload "gpm" while the gui is loaded ("service gpm stop" at a command prompt), then no mouse, but if I reload it ("service gpm start"), it works again.

Good luck.
