If you're new to GNU/Linux you are probably overreaching yourself compiling a 2.6 series kernel on a system like Mandrake 9.2. There are extra complications involved to do with devfsd being deprecated and the user-space module tools needing to be upgraded etc. and I don't know if Mandrake 9.2 is properly 2.6 ready. Also, the kernels that Mandrake supplies are heavily modified and so is some of the userspace software that goes with them. For example, the Mandrake supplied iptables software may not work properly with vanilla kernels from kernel.org - not even 2.4 ones. If you didn't get your 2.6.4 kernel from Mandrake then you shouldn't really use it anyway.

I can't quite make out what your specific problem is but my advice is to stick with what you've got for now. If you really want/need a 2.6 kernel - and who wouldn't ;) - see if Mandrake 10 has one 'out of the box' (I'm not sure) or go with a less top heavy binary distro like slackware or debian and read up on 2.6 migration at kerneltrap.org. If you must know where the supermount patch is, I think that Con Kolivas keeps a copy of it here somewhere:

but remember what I said about Mandrake and kernels and the problems of 2.4-2.6 migration in general.

Make sure you update your mod-tools or mod-init-tools (whichever it is that has modprobe, insmod, etc) before goign 2.6.x. This page may help: http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html
