Hi all,

Problem solved after running;
$ do-release-upgrade

Gnome can be started.

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise

The Codename is "precise"?

Try the following:
Create a new file like this, to make sure, that the filesystem isn't mounted as read only.
touch /tmp/testfile

If this works, you might have errors on the filesystem.
Therefore, reboot your computer and let it check you filesystem at boottime.
shutdown -r now -F

Thanks for your advice.

Further discovery:
It is NOT the problem on the OS of VM which is working. It can be ssh-accessed on host terminal. Other applications installed can be evoked except gnome-session. It is the problem on nVidia graphic device. On text scrolling at booting it displayhed "Starting load fallback graphics devices [fail](in red color)". I'm still trying to fix the problem.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

Upgrade VirtualBox from version 4.0.6 r71344 to 4.1.14 r71344

During installation no complaint found except;
....
Processing triggers for shared-mime-info ...
Unknown media type in type 'all/all'
Unknown media type in type 'all/allfiles'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mms'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmst'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmsu'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/pnm'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspt'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspu'
Unknown media type in type 'interface/x-winamp-skin'
...

Still no hope only a black screen displayed. The OS is running. I can ssh it on host terminal and to start its application.

Edit;
Before upgrade I made a clean installation of 12.04 as VM. It started without problem. After upgrade it also works without problem
