I have installed the drivers from my Lexmark z33 printer and it all went well but when I try to print I get a Catastrophe message

A print error occurred from system
/bin/usr/lpd –P ‘Lexmark’ ‘-#1’
/root/.kde/tmp-SERVER/kdeprint_pQZ5P7E execution failed with
Get_local_hostname ‘SERVER’ bad

Server is the name of the computer. The drivers were loaded via an .sh file.

I later tried using the printconf to install that way but there was no Z33 driver on the list and I could not get the printer installed. It did pick up the printer as /dev/usb/lp0

I use RH7.2 and run KDE.

Any help really appreciated.

I've tried this but how can I tell it to accept the driver? It isn't on the list of drivers that it gives.

I think you need to create a PPD file and restart your daemon. Not sure myself....try www.linuxprinting.org

Maybe try adding your hostname/ip combo to /etc/hosts, for example add the following line:

127.0.0.1 SERVER

Thanks for your help. I have made the changes in localhost and now am free of error messages. Still cannot print even though have restarted lpd and the printer. The printer configuration test page (on KDE – system – printer configuration) tells me that it sent data to the page but nothing comes out. I’ve tried to change the driver but the one I need is not on the list.

I then reran the setup file provided by Lexmark and it permitted me to print a test page.

When I closed that and tried to print something else no error messages – and no printed output appeared. Used kedit and the printer system currently used was
Generic UNIX LPD print system (default)

I’m sure this is probably some small setting that I have neglected. What should I do next?

Check logs. Daemons put error msgs into logs. Check your syslog and any lpd specific log there might be.

Also, trying cups sounds like a good idea, it works fine for me and was (almost) painless to set up.

I don't think you can use CUPS with your driver. For more info and a fix go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-Z33

Thanks, seems they rated the priner as a paperweight - ie not much use on Linux.

When I did get it to print locally it would miss the first 1-3 lines.

Has anyone had success with a Lexmark z33
