I struggle to get rw permissions under "normal" user accounts on a FAT drive. I automount (using /etc/fstab) the drive at /dev/hda2 in /mnt/fat1 and can access it whe logged in as root with no problems and can edit files with no problems. However, when I log in with my standard account I cannot edit any files on the drive, which is a pain because I want users to be able to copy their data to the FAT drive so the data is accessible under Windows 2000 (installed on /dev/hda1). Linux is installed at /dev/hda5, with a swap drive at /dev/hda6, if that has any bearing on the problem whatsoever. I've tried changing the permissions on the directory on which I mount the drive to rwxrwxrwx for all users, but the permissions just reset themselves back to rwxr--r--. I've also tried creating a 'fat1' user group and assigning permissions to that, adding the user accounts to the group, but this has not fixed the problem.

Help!!!!!!

The trick is to add "uamsk=0" to the line in /etc/fstab, eg:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windoze vfat defaults,user,umask=0 0 0
