Try changing the permissions.
In a terminal type "su chmod 777 /etc/shadow" (without the quotes)

"...and type /etc/shadow..." /etc/shadow is just a text file, you need to run a command like cat or less to view the contents, why you should want to I don't know as it only contains password hashes and shouldn't be readable, ie chmod 777 is a bad idea, 700 would be better but don't forget to change it back when finished.
What is it that you are trying to do?

thanks for responses, is any good website about linux commands, can i install kde,gnome together on same pc ? i try isntalling suse linux 10.1 it would't let me install both .
