On the Mac you can tell the output of a print command to be saved as a pdf.
Hence, any program that can print can produce a pdf file.

In Linux, print it to a file and use "ps2pdf file_I_just_printed.ps PDF_I_want.pdf". It's almost as easy as on a Mac, just one extra step.

"ps" stands for "PostScript" file - it's a standard file format used for printing.
To see if you have 'ps2pdf' just type it on the commandline or type 'whereis ps2pdf'.
The latest version of Open Office supports saving as a PDF - and I bet it can open your rich text document although I have not tried it.

thanks for all the help so far guys..
my version of openoffice in mandrake 9.0 does not support saving into pdf file. even star office 5.2.
anyway, this site helped me somehow. you upload your document in their site and they return to you its pdf version.

If you upgrade to OpenOffice 1.1, you'll be able to make PDFs directly from it.
It's loads better than Star Office 5.2. Performance and feature-wise.

You CAN make a PDF with OpenOffice 1.0
You need to go to print, then, instead of choosing your printer, pick the 'print to pdf' option, then a window will pop and ask you what the name of the PDF file should be and where to save it.
