There are no linux drivers for hsp, hcf, and hc whatever modems. These are not modems. the windows "driver" is actually the modem. The software does everything that should be done in hardware on a real modem. They might have a driver available someday for linux, but don't hold your breath. these companies that put out this garbage rely heavily upon microsoft business, and are not willing to risk that for anything. Sell you "modem" through the paper to someone who only wants windows. you might even get 5$ Out of it. Then bite the bullet and buy a real modem. You might even be able to find one used for about what you payed for that "modem emulator" program that came with a serial port.

The hardware modem will be well worth it. I suggest an external for maximum versatility. My Jaton Explorer was cheap ('bout 65 bucks) and works well with Linux and Windows. The previous reply is dead right.

I've physically removed my HSP PCTel modem from my system in hopes of using another modem. Though I've done the Control Panel/HSP/Uninstall as well as the Control Panel/System/ removing of the modem, the system detects it upon reboot. Are there registry edits that are mandatory in removing this modem? Any advice would help.

I had downloaded first a version of HSP-Micromodem 56K, and worked very well in my Red Hat 6.2, but I installed the Red Hat 7.0 and when I tried to init the modem with "insmod pctel.o" a message appears saying about a problem with the version, "the kernel version is 2.2.xxx but this file was compiled for version 2.4" and when I modified the file "version.h" to the same kernel version of the message says, my modem worked, but when I tried to connect to Internet had a problem with the kernel, somebody has this problem? and somebody could help me to repair this error?
Thanks.

PcTel DISABLING info:

Ok, someone there asked how to disable
the modem once It is physically disconnected,
well, there is a JUMPER on the motherboard that Does that stuff.. just look in your motherboard manual and Toggle that jumper =),
that's the solution.
