Guess you could boot from the DVD/CD and mount the drive and find a way to install localization. They usually make rescue disks but the process is the same. Only mount points and how you install stuff would be different. Basically you would want to use another media to boot the install and fix it. You could also copy it by hand.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Boot from a rescue or live CD, mount partitions on that drive, look around and see what the damage is.

Based on those messages: does the kernel image and initrd image exist? And in the proper place? Does /sbin/init exist?

Interesting problem. I wish I had a spare machine to experiment with.

Hi folks,

Tks for your advice.

Problem is not so easy to solve as imagined. LVM is running on the box and Ubuntu is a 64bit version.

Already solved the problem activating LV, VG and mounting the "/" parttion. Rescue disk/install did not work because w/o LVM tools. I was running 32bit Knoppix 5.1.1 to do the job. I can't find 64bit Knoppix

/bin/bash found missing. After mounting "/' I have to "chroot /mnt /bin/dash which was available on "/". Unfortunately it did not work needing a 64bit LiveCD. I searched around the whole World and found "knoppix-x86_64-v5.0.1CD-20061006-xen3.0.2.iso". I'm now download it with BT but very slow.

Any suggestion? TIA

Hi Jose,

What is your Linux distro and version?

Did it work previously?
