I have 40GB harddisk and it has 7GB primary partition hda1 that has Windows XP installed.
The windows partitions size is 7GB because I read somewhere that grub can jump to linux partition only if the first partition is less than 8GB.
How should i partition the rest for gentoo linux installation?

To keep things simple create two more primary partitions, one for swap (approx the same as amount of RAM) and the rest for root (aka "/"). Once you a familiar with GNU/Linux and know what directories on your system are going to grow etc then you can think about possibly creating more.
