OS: Win XP home edition
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlon XP 200+, 512
Comment:

I have a compaq presario 920US (AMD Athlon XP 200+, 512 MG Ram, 40GB DISK) running Win XP home edition and I would like to install RedHat 8.0.

I've done the partitions, using partition magic, and having a drive C (NTFS) and a Linux partition (ext2, I think) I tried to install RedHat 8.0.

The problem is that when booting the laptop from the RH installation disks, the boot process stops when checking the disk partitions.

Also, if I swicth the DMA off, I go over this problem but later on it's like the disk wasn't there.

Could someone give me a kind help with this problem? (a step-by-step solution if possible!!)

I would most appreciate if I would get some help soon, because I'm in the middle of doing some really important work and I now need Linux desperatly!!

Thanks!

Re-install both OS from the very beginning
1. Lowformat your Hard drive (use manufacturer of HD tool)
2. Format only 20 Gig for your XP and install XP.
3. Install Linux after this in the rest 20 Gig

Everything will be great after this and you'll get experience of starting from the scratch with both OS.

Re-install both OS from the very beginning
1. Make Low level format-write zeros to your Hard drive (use manufacturer of HD tool)
2. Format only 20 Gig for your XP and install XP.
3. Install Linux after this in the rest 20 Gig - Linux will recognize unformatted space and format it accordingly. Just customize the swap and mount points you wish to have.

Everything will be great after this and you'll get experience of starting from the scratch with both OS.
