I am trying to use smitty to add 2Gb virtual memory to each one of the page files I have. Instead, it asks me for "the number of additional logical partitions to add".
1. what does a logical partition have to do with this?
2. how do I find out how large a logical partition is?I am configuring the page size such that the total size of my page files is 1.5 times the size of my virtual memory(bootinfo -r); thanks.

Swap file, paging file, virtual memory are basically different names for the same thing. Generally, when a Linux distro is installed, a swap partition is created (or should be). I don't know anything about AIX but I know it's not Linux. What are you using it for?

AIX usually runs Solaris. You may get better support by putting your question in that forum (if you are running a Solaris box). If on the other hand you are running Linux on an AIX platform, you are in the right place.
Everything that follows assumes you are using a Linux distribution and the information provided pertains specifically to the Linux OS.
Your question number one has already been answered. Linux uses a swap partition rather than a swap (paging) file, so the utility you are attempting to use is asking how many logical partitions to add (or how large to make each new logical partition to obtain the 2GB additional swap space).
The answer to question number two is that a logical partition's size is limited by available disk space, and in some cases the system BIOS. For example, if you have 100GB available disk space, and you tell the application to make four partitions to get the 2GB swap space you want to add, each partition will be 512 MB (.5GB).
This last part is a guess since I am unfamiliar with the smitty application.
