Comment:

Hello
I am a first time Linux user so terms may be out of sync.
I installed Linux Suse 10.1 on my machine and the installation went flawless. When Linux attempted to load the Suse flash screen appeared and then it scrolled though all the kernel information. Then the monitor displayed an “out of range” error.
I have researched this error already and have found numerous posts. Though due to lack of familiarity with the OS I remain lost upon trouble shooting steps.
So I have collected information my monitor (Star Logic 17 LCD) it is currently displaying in 1024 x 768, H 48.2KHZ and V 59.8 HZ. In the Linux hardware screen (installation screen) it displays 1024x768 to be V Freq: 60 and width: 1024. I have a G Force XFX 7600 GPU.
I have read that you supposed to match these two numbers manually, because it is not plug and play like Windows is. I can press ctrl alt F2 and bring up the root screen and log in and such. Then one is supposed to load this pico program which I can do, I don’t know how to save the changes though or what these changes even mean. Or one can just change the monitor settings for Suse once again I am lost.
So I need some pointers and detailed instructions to proceed. Thanks for all your help once again.

Give yast (or is it yast2 these days) a go, it's the configuration tool for suse. If you can't configure your X display from there try sax (or sax2) which was the suse X config util when I used to use suse many moons ago.

No matter which way you try, either one of the above or by using pico or another text editor, all you are doing is modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to suit your needs. To use pico try:
# pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf
If you don't have pico installed try nano (a pico clone)
Once you have made the changes press Ctrl&X and then Y and then Enter to save the file.
Another way would be to use xorgconfig....

Okay wow thanks. I made great headway.

So here is where I am now. I was able to boot into xorg.conf screen and was able to find the mointor.
I went to the mointor changed my mointor setting to:
Display size- 1024 768 (I changed this setting...)
Horz...- 30-50
Identifier- "mointor[0]"
Option- "DPMS"
Vendorname- "NUH"
Vert...- 43-60
Usermodes- "modes[0]"

(All of which are in my mointor current setting)

So I was able to boot into Suse (though I did have start up sound) but still had out of range error. So if you need more information on that xorg.conf screen- I wil be happy to provide. Or if I need to make any more change. Thanks for your help thus far.

Not sure if you have the correct vertical and horizontal refresh rates. Do you have something like ddcxinfo or ddcprobe installed?

Came across this on the net for a 17" Starlogic LCD
Horizontal Ref: 30-62 khz
Vertical Ref: 56-75 hz
(http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-161677.html)

Your monitor section in xorg.conf should look something like:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Starlogic M17GKA"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-62
VertRefresh 56-75
EndSection

Before you make any more changes make a backup of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and also post the contents up here....

Can you get a live CD like knoppix to work? If so, boot into that and make a copy of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and try using that one.

My screen now reads...

Display size- 1024 768...)
Horz...- 30-62
Identifier- "Starlogic M17GKA"
Option- "DPMS"
Vendorname- "NUH"
Vert...- 56-75
Usermodes- "modes[0]"

I do not know what ddcxinfo or ddcprobe are?
Yes I already made a back up of the conf file.
I have to try the Live CD of Knoppix. I am downloading it now... will try it tonight or tomorrow night.
Thanks again for your help.

Change
Identifier "Starlogic M17GKA"
to
Identifier "moitor[0]"

You can probably also remove the line
Usermodes "modes[0]"

Just for kicks I tried re-installing it...
So now my .conf screen now reads

Display size- 345 259 {(default)(tried changing it to 1024 768- same result)}
Horz...- 30-62
Identifier- "moitor[0]"
Option- "DPMS"
Vendorname- "NUH" (Star Logic not listed in installation menu)
Vert...- 56-75

Start up sounds still sounds- and no errors... Unsure of why numbers are so small in display size?

Tried Knoppix and it worked I was able to boot into. Though I was command prompt and typed in pico /etc/X11... and it did not work. Any suggestions thier? Also when booting I caught of a flash- mointor: generic mointor... So maybe that means something.

Anyways. Thanks for all your help.

If you can boot knoppix OK then just copy the xorg.conf file either directly to your hard disk or onto a floppy/USB drive first.

You can use a terminal with something like "cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /mnt/floppy" or simply use the GUI. You should find a desktop icon for your hard drive to which you can copy it if you don't have a floppy.
