OS X debian dual boot?

I am trying to do a network install of Debian on my iBook. The issue is that all of the documentation I found suggests partitioning Linux first, and OSX later, and when I partitioned I did the opposite because that's what I always did on the PC. So is it possible to dual boot with Debian sitting on the second half of the drive? The other issue I am having is that I can't figure out how to create a swap partition. I have space for it, but I don't know how to format it. Is swap just a standard ext2 file format?

yes, just make sure the /boot partition is below 1024 cyl.

no, its a different format. the command is mkswap /dev/hdxx
