I got this problem. I have automatic login and loading of statx/kde. When my computer finishes booting if I try tu run tux racer or any open gl app (chromium, armageTron) I get this message:

---start quote---
Error: Could not open /dev/nvidiactl because the permissions
are too restrictive. Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
section of /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps
to correct.
---end quote---

So I went there:

---start quote---
A: It is likely that a security module for the PAM system may be
changing the permissions on the NVIDIA device files. In most cases
this security system works, but it can get confused. To correct this
problem it is recommended that you disable this security feature.
Different Linux distributions have different files to control this;
please consult with your distributor for the correct method of
disabling this security feature. As an example, if your system has
the file
/etc/security/console.perms
then you should edit the file and remove the line that starts with
"" (we have also received reports that additional references to
in console.perms must be removed, but this has not been verified
by NVIDIA). If instead your system has the file
/etc/logindevperms
then you should edit the file and remove the line that lists
/dev/nvidiactl. The above steps will prevent the PAM security system
from modifying the permissions on the NVIDIA device files. Next,
you will need to reset the permissions on the device files back
to their original permissions and owner. You can do that with the
following commands:
chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* chown root /dev/nvidia*
----end quote---

The problem is that when I add a "#" at the begginning or the line in /etc/security/console.perms the system doesn't boot anymore.. it goes "big problem line whatever dri" and "cannot find /dev/hda6"(my linux partition) and cannot mount filesystem etc etc etc...I have to boot failesafe/text mode to remove the "#" that made all this trouble.
I tried adding
chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia*
chown root /dev/nvidia*
to /etc/rc.d/rc.local but it doesn't do anything.

What is really weird is that when I log of as a normal user, log in as root... the games work fine.. then If I log off as root and re log in as normal user everything works! But not when I just turn on my computer and let it auto load startx kde and log in as a normal user...

Any idea? I think this all started either when I installled joystick drivers or when I installed nvidia drivers.

oh yeah, If I remove the automatic login from mandrake control center but do let the automatic start of X evrything works... so basically if I click on my icon and click "go" every thing works... but if I let it do that for me big trouble.. of course I could do the little effort of clicking two times every time I boot but that would be like "webcam doesn't work.. unplug the webcam... now everything works.."

So if anyone can figure this out take a few seconds to explain this.

Thank you all...
