Is there a port for a Network cable on the back of the modem?

Do you have a NIC card?

If the answer to both these questions is yes, then it may be easier to remove the USB cable that runs between your computer and the Cable Modem, and connect a Cat5 (Network) cable between them. You can then configure a standard network connection (Ethernet) using DHCP to establish your Internet connection in MCC.

You should be able to do that.

Open MCC (System > Configuration > Configure your computer in the menu system)

Select Network & Internet in the category list (left)

Open Set up a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...) in the main pane (right)

Select Cablemodem in the Choose the Network connection you want to configure list and click Next (bottom right)

You should be able to follow the prompts from there. I use a Cablemodem here, but I have a router between it and my computer to make a home network, so I use an ethernet connection to the router rather than a direct connection to the cablemodem.

As a side note: you can use only one port on the LAN side of the cablemodem, either the USB port or the ethernet, but NOT both.
