There is a version of antivirus for Linux from
Norton!!! I've never heard such a thing
before. Sure, there is an antivirus for Linux
out there but the likelihood of your system
getting infect is very, very, very low. Your
system is more likely getting DoS than a virus.
If you use google to search for it, you would
find it... (I've been using Linux for ages and
never once get a virus! This is, after all,
Linux, not MicroSuck.)

1. There is no Norton for Linux, since Norton, (Symantec), is owned by MS, there never will be either.

2. If there was a Linux version, MS would never give it away. ("download freely")

3. Linux does not get "virus" infections, due to 99.99% of virus's being written specficlly for MS email clients. (It's only a matter of time tho.)

4. While not vuneriable to virus's at the moment, you can get nasty trojans and worms dropped on your Linux system, which you can protect yourself from with a good firewall.

"(Symantec), is owned by MS..."

Where can I find more about the acquisition of Symantec by Microsoft? Or the majority shareholder interest of Microsoft in Symantec?

Really, I have never heard that. In the 1999 DOJ MS trial Gordon Eubanks (former CEO of Symantec) was a witness for the defense.

" But the Norton Utilities Business is as good as ever. And there is is more competition than ever in that area. So I don't know how you could logically conclude that adding things to the operating system hurts that business."

There wasn't any mention of Symantec as a holding of MS. Otherwise, the inclusion of a former CEO of Symantec would be worthless. Granted, Symantec had interests in Windows as a dominant platform, but that can be said of hundreds of other companies as well.

Yes, Symantec has a partnership with MS (as it does with every other company of any importantance, including Sun, HP, Apple, etc.).

Was basing my info on way back when the Norton un-delete and other utilities was purchased by MS, and Peter Norton announced he was selling to Bill and co. Was early to mid 90's or so.

I'm sure there's been lots or corp re-structuring since then tho. As I understand it MS bought both Peter's old company and merged it with Symantec, or such. But what do I know, that was too many bytes under the bridge.

Well, for the record, I believe Norton was purchased 1990 by Symantec (Symantec had gone public in 1989).

Prasad,

Do not heed advice from Rick. He's full of misinformation. He's like the SCO of Computing.net: All lip, no evidence.

In his own words: "I guess you also missed the part about my being new to Linux, and the only stupid thing I did was to believe the hype from you Linux propeller heads that Linux was bomb proof and could never be hacked, etc, etc."

Does that sound to you like the words of someone who knows what he's talking about, or trustworthy enough to approach for advice?

It was not an estimation.

When I see mis-information, I call it. It's a downright fallacy to infer that all operating sytems are alike, especially when comparing Windows to Unix-based systems.

If someone wishes to challenge that, then he/she needs to come forward with the garbonzos to back up his/her statements. To date, the person in question has not done so. Nor will that person because it is not possible to support such erroneous comments.

This is a Linux forum. There are other forums on this site that are more appropriate and welcoming to the windows propaganda machine.
