Most distributions configure the system, by default, to disable root login to a GUI session. Most provide a method to override this setting, but each may be different. I think it is a serious breach of security to run a root GUI session, and I strongly discourage the use of root sessions in a console screen. Most distributions provide methods of performing administrative tasks, by providing the root password to authorize the action from a regular user session.
