So i said good bye to windows (for the most part), andhave upgraded to linux, and when it works i love it.
My laptop originally had 8.04lts x86 and after awired update, worked flawlessly with wireless. Right up until i started messing with stuff. So because thisisa hugelearning experience, and i back everything up to a different drive, i just reinstalled. However i couldnt get a wired connection then. so i figured its a bad install, so i installed 8.10 with the same result. Ive even reset the bios.Any ideas?
Also ive posted on ubuntu forums already with no result :(

"Ive even reset the bios"
I don't know why the hell people do that all the time. If the system had been working fine, then you "started messing with stuff", why would you think a BIOS reset would fix it? Were you messing with the BIOS?

Why reset the bios? Because its worked numerous times in windows xp when it said i had no wifi card. Its built in, reset the bios, reboot, and all was good.

Your best starting point is to find out what chipset your wireless and wired networks use. Once you have that information then you can check on the unbuntu web site and see what the current compatibility is with those chipsets. Once you have this information you can move forward.Tim

dude, why the pain to search and seek? You seem to have enough drive space for 20 OS. Just download the latest UBUNTU disk and load to a new location. Since you have it backed up, no sweat right? Then compare the two to find the flaw and learn from it. See if you can get the botched version to work, great learning experience. Tried Xubuntu yet...? Great...

Well just resetting the bios isn't going to fix things.
You will have to look in your bios and determine if the settings are enabled for your wired & wireless devices.
Resetting just reverts back to a factory state.
Also Don't know if it applies to your computer but could possibly be a PNP issue? I know on most desktops there are options for PNP os. Linux generally was not one back in the day but not quite so sure now.
I guess you could check to see if Ubuntu even recognizes the devices. Don't know if this will help or work but can always try
open terminal window and type
"sudo lshw"If it does not then you might be on the right path with a bios that's not configured correctly.
Or if you suspect it's a Linux error I suppose you could buy or borrow a USB networking device and see if Ubuntu recognizes it.
Sorry I can't offer more advise as i'm fairly new to Ubuntu myself.
