After installing Mandrake 8.2, I noticed that there was no sound. Looking through the hardware list I noticed that for some reason my Riptide Sound card was placed under Modem with the Rockwell modem. However, Sound is empty in the hardware list. Is there any way to fix this problem?

ps. my modem and sound: Rockwell/Riptide Combo Card

Thanks,

Seba

I tried sndconfig which recognized my sound card. However, immidietely after a message came up saying that this sound card is not supported. That was it. I also tried Open Sound with no results. The computer freezes when I run soundon command. I think the reason for this is that Open Sound doesn't support Mandrake 8.2 kernel(but I might be wrong).
The best solution for this problem is probably a new sound card. Does anyone know what is the best sound card for Mandrake 8.2? Would Sound Blaster 16 PCI work?

I like Emu10k1 based sound cards.

To install "/sbin/modprobe emu10k1"
add "/sbin/modprobe emu10k1" to your init script to load during boot.

(Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1)
