I have installed a lot of video players on my system including Kaffeine, Xine and Gxine.
While I can get the picture in all of them, I am unable to hear sound.

Do you get sound from other apps? What desktop are you using? Have you tried using different sound outputs in the config for the players, eg alsa, arts (for KDE) or OSS? Have you checked that your sound mixer levels are up and not muted?

Have you got mplayer installed? Launch it from a terminal with a video file and look through the output....it should state why it can't play any sound. Perhaps you don't have the (win32)codecs installed?

I tried everything as recommended, but now nothing works. Not mplayer, not Kaffeine, not Gxine. They all cut off when I start them.

What error do they give? If you don't know try running them from a terminal and see what the output says....
