When I try to play sound it says:

Couldn't open soundserver - make sure artsd is really running.

I go to the terminal, check artsd, and it says that the device "dev/dsp/" doesn't exist. I'm away that that's what is used for sound, but how can I install that? It didn't come with mandrake...

My video isn't up to standards either..it runs like on a 486, you can see the frames changing and the videos skip.

It doesn't read my cd-roms correctly either. Or rather not at all. The only cds my cd-roms will read are the setup cds(this is while in the X environment). Even then the only cd-rom that will read the cds is the CD-R. The regular cd-rom won't work.

If anyone can help on any of these I'd really be thankful. I'm new to linux...this is my main problem...

It's an ASOUND EXPRESS el-cheapo using the Avance Logic ALS4000 chipset. It's detected fine in linux, the only real problem is the fact that the directory: "/dev/dsp" does not exist. I'm talking with someone about a program called makedev that should make that directory, do you know anything about that?

If you started with Mandrake 7.2 you've had a shortcut to your trouble. I started from the DeLuxe 7.0 package, with insurmountable problems in Xwindow and sound. My last sound card is the industry standard SoundBlaster (AWE64), an ISA card just to suit the taste of Linux, but no luck.
I chose Mandrake because the install program looked neat. I don't know why Mandrake alone has so much problem in video configuring. I can't put in an email help because it does not recognize my regis#(Mandrake-Macmillan combo).
Has anyone else had any better luck in the mirky Linux World?

my sound card works and detects in 7.2 fine with one problem...it plays about 1:42 or less of a song and then stops! i check all possible causes and i'm right now stumped.
as far as the CD roms i changed my under linux config to "supermount" and they work fine now. even my burner! the video i went with a generic card instead of my regular card...zero problems there now either...just working on the sound thing and as to why it stops after X minutes of play.
