Hello everybody! I am completely new at linux. By the way they work perfect except from the sound. From the hardware information i've seen that my sound card Conexant CX20549-12 is recognized but I just can't get no sound. Also everything is unmuted. Nothing is muted...
ubuntu 7.10 supports your card but there are a few issues... ubuntu does not support mp3 only wav and some other 1 or 2 native formats. download vlc media player(supports all formats) or xmms(mp3player) to play mp3 and video files
click on sound icon (open it), than click edit and open preferences.select (tracks to be visible) external amplifier. When you add this a new menu called switches appears.click to open it and than click on external amplifier to turn it on and than click again to turn it off, you should have sound now. It is useful to play some audio or video file when you are doing this like something from youtube so you know when you enabled your sound. I had same problems with my tron (tronote) laptop (pentium m 1.6, intel based machine) using kubuntu or ubuntu, so I just opened audio and try to clicking on everithing, on off on off etc..it is silly but it works!
An odd variation of this problem is that I was able to hear audio for 3 weeks after installing Ubuntu. Also, I had been able to rip music from CDs and then burn that ripped music to another disk. Suddenly, both stopped- I could neither hear nor burn. I haven't looked into the suggested fix (above) yet, but I will. If nothing else, I'm curious as to what happened and how something which was working suddenly UNworks. I have managed to get the sound back by installing Kubuntu along side of Ubuntu- don't ask me why this worked as a fix, but it did. Now maybe I will figure out the problem with suddenly not being able to burn to disk...

As an afterthought, I have a question or two for AhronZombi. How, exactly, is your suggestion a solution to a problem? You might just as well have asked, "Have you considered installing Windows Vista". The point is, to fix the problem(s) that exist(s)- not evade it/them by moving on to other unknown problems. Wouldn't it be a darn shame to actually learn something?
