No route to host

OS: debian 3.0
CPU/Ram: p166/32

I have computers one has win xp pro the other linux debian 3.0 both connected through a switch , I telnet back and forth no prob's till I installed a modem on the linux box, now I can't communicate either way when i try the linux box says somthing like " unable to connect to remote host: No route to host"
cards on both machines are fine, address's are good as well as subnet address's
I can telnet 127.0.0.1 on both computers.
please can some one help me out.
will be much greatful

hi, have you try to see how are the routes in the route table? use netstat -r and if you are using the net 192.168.2.0 for example, it will return something like this:

Destination Gateway Genmask Iface

192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 eth0

may be you are routing that network to the modem
