As far as I know there are 65536 ports avaliable. But normally you are not allowed access to ports below 1024 as you need root previleges to access these ports.
Also you may not find any port open on the machine if it is running a firewall.
Usually RedHat Machines have firewall configured at installation time. Trust me alone this thing can give you headaches as everything seems to be OK but you are not able to connect to remote computer
