I'm new to linux and can't seem to find a distro that would work. I first tried Red Hat 9, it would always stall during the setup when installing the "main linux kernal" or whatever. It doesn't matter what packages I chose, it would always stall on that particular one. Then I tried to Linux Mandrake 9.2 and the install went fine. Except when trying to load it, it will always stall while loading. First time is always when doing "mozilla registry" or somethign like that. I reboot, try it agian and everytime it now stalls saying something with insmod. Any help would be appreciated.

Those distros that "stall and don't work for you", did you download them and burned the CD?
If so, did you ensure that the ISO was burned correctly? The checksum passed? Did you test the same CD's in some othr machine to see if they stall in the same place or at all, or give you any other problem at all? If it is the first time you install Linux (any Distro), did you ensure that you also tried by accepting the defaults it offers (either to test where the problem might be, or until more experienced)
The above are the most common reasons why users have problem during install. See which one could apply in your case, and see if you can post any more specific details if you have problems again.

Have you tried SuSE 9.0? I have tried many other distros(Mandrake, Redhat, Debian, Fedora, etc.,) but finally decided to stick with SuSE. It is easy to install. The YAST GUI is perfect for a beginner as it directs you through every step. SuSE also has a great hardware website, where you would find many drivers and patches. Hope this may help.
Good luck!

I think you should try knoppix 3.3 live
first, and get used to linux, thats what i
did, at least get used to customizing it,
and what now, learn a few terms, and them
move onto either SuSE or Mandrake for
beginners...i am still learning, and i
think i am getting a handle on it, and i
LOVE IT!!! let me repeat I LOVE IT!!!
Linux is great once you get used to it.
