The better way to configure a network is install Red Hat o Mandrake 7.0 The installation program (graphical) configure it and ask for some parameters of the network. Otherwise you can use "linuxconf" as root. I think that Red Hat 5.0 has this tool. Also you can use de "control-panel" of Red Hat. It's a graphical interface of linuxconf.

1. Is the NIC ISA or PCI based.
2. If it is ISA try running the isapnp utility.
3. If you know the model of your NIC refer to the driver list (not sure of location, i found it off of the how to on linux.com) and load that driver manually as a module.
that's all I know. I'm sure there will be better advice that what I can give......I had the same prob

try "netconfig" from the text console, if u have a dhcp service select that and hit OK...
p.s this will work only if linux know about your NIC
