I have installed Redhat 7.0 with gnome.
Why would I use unix/linux compared to say Microsoft NT/Win2000.
I've noticed Robbo has alot to say about windows, what about Linux, Anyone have comments?

How would anyone but you know which is best for you? Now you've installed Redhat try both and see - one is free, if that makes a difference.

What will you be using it for?
if you goto www.geocities.com/robk1982 It has reasons why not to use Linux, but of course Linux aint gunna set you back hundreds of dollars, that is its only positive compared to Windows 2000, but you, pay for what you get.
Robbo

Hey robbo you should update your list of reasons sone of those are WAAAAAAAAY out of date. And some show nothing to back up your claims. I am not saying one is better than the other I prefer linux because I like to tinker and fool around with things thats one reason I like Linux(among others but lets not start a war here!), and some people just like to check email and surf the net they should use windows. You see I really think it just comes down to personal taste and what you want to do with your PC.
Snoozer

Snoozer, it was write when i typed it (less than a montha ago), and it aint finished yet and will have reasons to back it up when i get round to it.
so like WAAAAAAAY out of date, is like 2 weeks waht the hell is something 6months out of date?
Maybe you should get your facts right before telling people off.
Seriusoly though, apart from the cost there is no reason on this planet NOT to use windows, it can do anything, and a lot more, than Linux can do, usually quicker and more easily, if you can proove otherwise snoozer do so.

Hey Robbo calm down I wasan't trying to start nothing! at all I kinda like these your style however I do disagree with you on some points Many you state are true but some are wroing here are a few: I cut n pasted from your page
4.Linux does not support PnP technology, this saves users much time and hassle when installing new hardware (modems, printers etc... I have a realtek 8019 PnP ethernet card that works fine and a ess1869 PnP sound board and both work under Linux with kernel 2.2x.
5.Linux has no "Power Management" Features similar to those found in Windows 9x/NT/2000 Thats just not true my box has power managment6.Linux, as yet, has no support for USB
Nope the new Kernel 2.4 has usb support!Internet Explorer (5.x) is regarded as the Best Internet Browser (CNET, ZDNET and more), IE is not available on Linux. LOL I can't stand IE even when I used windows and if you want to get techinal IE is "based" on moasic
mosaic=netscapeThe Most popular Applications are not available for Linux. Examples are ICQ, MSN Messanger, MS Office, MS Publisher, Lotus apps,Internet Explorer, the list goes on.
There are versions of icq and programs that will hook you up to msn messanger and office apps are getting better all the time for IE see aboveThe way the Windows shell intergrates with the internet, makes it great, especially for home users. There is nothing even close to this on Linux. .
Now this is just a BAD idea for a # of reasons such as security it bogs down the system and is just a reason for MS to bundle there browser with there OS
9.There is no central point of contact for Linux. No centralized area to find bug fixes, new releases
Try kernel.org for the latest kernel releases
Linux Technically has NO GUI. True but if you want to get right down to it Win9x still depend alot on DOS to run.It supports virtually no Hardware compared to windows. true not as much as windows but it supports ALOT of hardware more so since kernel 2.4
KDE/Gnome etc... basically copy win95 anyways. well Billy boy basically ripped off apple (even though apple did rip the gui off from XEROX)
You don't get to watch the pretty Defragment every week or so. Well this is because you don't hve to defrag like you have to do every week in linux
You cant send a virus to a mate who pissed you off if there using linux. and thats a bad thing (i know this one was a joke!) look at all the viruses you hear about with windows when was the last time anyone you know with linux got a virus>?
Backspace wont. work well Mine dose!
It don't have microsoft Notepad on it. Why would you want a text editor that is still after 13 years incapable of working with any text file larger than approximately 60K bytes.
Winamp isn't made for Linux. XMMS is made for linux it's just like winamp
Well thats all I'm bored of typing like I said linux is not for everyone but it;s not totally useless either!

Your list is truley pathetic
USB comment is a total lie even in 2.2
kernels that Alan Cox back ported
Linux IS a PnP OS and NT is NOT
SUDO will delegate perm.
Compile in LFS(large file support or use
SGI XFS and have the heavy wieght champ FS"The Linux 2.2 kernal still is in very early
stages of providing a tuned SMP Kernal,
unlike WinNT."err 6 months out of date? try 2 years
Win2000 still does not have a journaled
file system while Linux has Reiser(which I
use) JFS, EXT2 and XFS. Windows2000 is a big
loser here
Central contact? IBM
The GUI on Linux are better than MS GUIs
which can be streamed across the net and have
skinable interfaces and virtual displays.
Only client apps are missing
The rest is just redundant, a matter of
opinion and just a cheap point such as
windows only hardware only good for
Windows(gee I wonder why they call it Win)
and those devices leach on the CPU.

Wow Robbo hasan't commented yet? Better update your list robbo it seems to be getting smaller!

Thanks for the comment flame this. So where would you suggest a "STUPID" person look if not in a forum for Linux? Are you really trying to say you don't know? Why do you consider this a stupid question? Just because I am new th the Linux environment does not mean I am new to the forum! I've answered my share of what seem to be trivial questions. I'm sure they weren't to the one that posted the question though, and I was glad to help. I was looking for input on the power of LINUX, where else better to find this answer be but in a forum of LINUX users. So let me rephrase the question, What noticable performance gains does Linux have over other OS's. Does it have better uptime results or will it crash the same as windows? Why do so many people use Linux? It can't just be because it's free and it's NOT Microsoft, or is it?

G'day,
Bought a new computer game, can't be bothered replying properly, will when i get round to it, too busy trying to finish it.Robbo.
IE5 is the best browser, who gives if it is based on Mosaic, that doesn't mean a frigging thing.

Sorry correct Ext2 for EXT3 for a journaled
files system. Ext2 is not.Oh Robo how much did you pay for your game?
http://www.flightgear.org/I think I will shut down Mozilla when I play.
Its a good thing you like IE5 so much because
sadly you can't shut IE5 off now can you? but
hey that is what swap space if for.

I find IE very slow on my win system (maybe it;s just me I don't know) I think it is due to the intergration with the OS itself. actully it dose mean somthing that IE is based on MOSAIC you see because Mosaic is basically netscape (I think they were made by the same person) which means IE is based on netscape. there are many microsoft products that microsoft did NOT invent they just bought (or ripped off!) this happens with all companies but microsoft is the front runner in that hell they even bought DOS!!
SO robbo I am looking forward to your rebuttle to mine and james points about your list I really am starting to enjoy these conversations

Reasons to use Linux over Windows
1. Cost: Linux is free while Windows ranges from $80 to $250
(less for upgrades $50 or so for win9x). On the server license cost will sky
rocket to thousands for upgrade Win2000 versions to client connect licenses
and third party software that is left out on a standard Linux/BSD system
including C and C++ compilers.
2. Stability: MS claims no "study" has been done to prove stability. Well they would
not dare found a study. Word of mouth customer satisfaction is far more reliable
than a vendor funded claim. My server below.
12:39PM up 84 days, 3:27, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
3. Open standards: You cannot be locked into a vendor.
4. PnP Linux has been for years while only 9X has been but not NT.
5. Windows is fragmented: DOS, Win3.1, Win95, Win98, Win mil, Win2000, WinCE.
while libraries in Linux need to be updated this is really not much of a
problem given Linux is OSS and apps are easily recompiled.
6 Windows9x or NT has no loadable modules support while a simple "modprobe"
in Linux will load the module. Loading a driver in Linux requires no reboot
while something as trivial as changing an IP address requires a reboot in
Windows.
7. Support: MS does not support Windows but relies on computer vendors to do
so. Large Linux vendors directly offer support as well as VA Linux and IBM.
8 Documentation: Linux is the best documented OS to date and huge archives
can be found in news groups, universities and distribution sites. Windows
does not have any white papers on things as basic as the registry.
9. Scripting: Automation and small procedures are easily created in Linux
while Windows makes this difficult at best.
10. Scalability: Linux can run on an embedded device to a 386, to an S390 mainframe.
separate incompatible WinOSes are needed and/or no longer supported and
mainframe is out of the question. Lnux also works seamlessly with commercial
UNIX machines can run on well over a hundred CPUs.
11.Portability: Windows run on x86 compatible. Linux runs on x86, Alpha, Sparc
PPC, mk, MIPS, S390, and a few others.
12. Alternate configurations: Linux kernels may be recompiled for optimization
and the GUI is separate from the kernel itself. Running a GUI on a server
is a waste of resources while Win2000 must run a GUI. Linux may
be optimized as a router or firewall.
13 Security: Linux exploits are still far below NT exploits. NT still has
exploits then all other OSes combined even though it is still on a minority
of machines. On the workstation Win9x always runs as root is is often
the victim of a virus. Even if there was a Linux virus an mail can be opened
as a non privileged user.A Linux virus is almost unheard of. Linux admins
will also find openBSD(another free Unix) as a good security option and against this Windows2000
is laughable. See openBSD.org
14. Linux uses less swap space than windows and when it does uses more efficient
swap partitions as opposed to swap files
15. Linux tends to use less disk space than windows.
16. Linux GUIs are generally superior to Windows in many areas
due to skin-able interfaces and virtual desktop(cannot run out of room).
Many interfaces are configured to look like windows. Windows desktops are
geared towards business users. (I often Run KDE2 at home but would never
at work where I use GNUstep).
17 Remote administration: Linux can be easily and securely maintained with ssh
(or less secure telnet). If GUI is required then xclients are easily exported
to a workstation(money savings on video cards and monitors). Windows is very
difficult to maintain remotely and typically requires the purchase of additional
software.
18. Bug reports on Linux have a fix within days while Windows takes months
before it is even acknowledged by Microsoft.
19. Linux is OSS as well as the usually associated programs and can be
modified by some users.
20. Using Linux will not support a rather corrupt MS which has been found
to engage in poor business practices.
21. Linux future is certain due to a community larger than any commercial
offering.
22. Wine: Linux can run many Windows programs while Windows must use Win32
23 Linux knowledge can lead to much higher paying Unix jobs(I know I am one)
24. Linux is Fun.Are there reasons to run windows? On the client yes
(but then why not dual boot Linux is free?)
1. Games support is better in Win9x as of today
2. Windows Office for the few that need those feature(there is a minority
that actually does)
3. The are still quite a few Win32 programs not ported to Linux. On the server almost no reason to use Windows(that I know).
On my server I run NFS and Samba and can file server or application serve to
ANY OS.(At home I mount the same file sytem no matter what I boot)

I paid $14.95 (AU) for my game.
James, Ring Microsoft, they support it, both via email and telephone, at least MS Australia do, I'd assume it is the same in most countries.
MS have both word-of-mouth and actual DATA to proove reliability, as well as ganrantees, Linux has only word-of-mouth.Yes you get paid more, well done to you, but that while that is good for you, think of the business that is paying you, I'm sure they'd rather pay you less but they are forced to pay more. A lawyer or a politician doesn't need to know Linux and i'd say they get a s---load more cash than you.

I don't really Like Flight Sims, so that site seems kinda useless.
If you are having troubles turning IE5 off, email me and i'll tell you how, it is very easy.Robbo

Robbo,
FYI : We have Frontpage extentions 98 so our
people(I really do not support it but it is
on my machine) called MS "support" when
Frontpage clients would give errors and the
only thing they said was upgrade to
2000(which did not work). Don't worry though
I figured out the problem not MS. FYI do not
make subwebs very big because the client will
time out waiting for the O(N) algorithm to
finish. Did MS tell anyone this? Noooooo!
Could they diagnose it when it was the
problem? Noooooooo. But good old truss on
Solaris could.
Well the reason why Unix pays more is that it
does more. Two of us support the our intranet
in a large corp one works part time and I
often have time to help out the ecommerce
team. The database, FTP server, and News
server(news is Sparc Linux) never go down and all
I do is add users(400 day uptimes until
hardware upgrades). The Web server always has
development going on so it will keep you busy
in any case. but our uptime was better than
our mainframes at over 99.9% last year :-) I
do get calls when our NT mail servers went
down users wanted to know why mail was not
comming off the box to out smtp host so I
will admit Unix has no answer when NT
machines it depends on goes down.
Do you really think an NT adminstrator
who supports a work group server is going to
be paid what a good person who supports Unix
machine in the can do for the whole
enterprise? You see, janitors do not make too
much money either but go ahead and pay your
defence lawyer what a janitor is paid. Its
the same thing right?

James,
Its called suply and demand, a simple busuness term. Unix is of high demand at the moment, and you are one of only a few who can supply the help they need, NT has many experts, so they must charge less or they wont get a job.For your information a janitor (a garbo? dont use janitor over here) actually get paid a hell of alot. ask one, some crap about the risk of needle in bins or crap. You'd find it is actually a good salary, though a crap job, as most jobs with computers would be.
Robbo.

Hey Robbo, you said you could kill IE5...TELL ME! I've been trying for ages.
I agree that Micro$oft is a ripoff but win2k is a good prod.
Dj Blind
