Hi,

I recently switched from E-Smith linux (easy) to mandrake linux for my server os.

I have all the server options set up, enabled, in mandrake enabled thru Mandrake control center. But I have several problems:

1- I can't see the server hostname in the windows workgroup. (or type in \\IP)
2- I can't ftp to it or SSH it
3- nothing will work booted into 'linux-secure' (default in menu). Only 'linux'. Am I insecure using 'linux' instead of 'linux-secure'???

Please help the newbie. :-/

thanks!!

1) Check /etc/samba/smb.conf for any errors (eg wrong workgroup name). Make sure that the samba service is actually running:
# /etc/init.d/smbd start

2) Check your firewall settings.

3) When you say nothing will work....what exactly? Does it boot at all? Can you start X? Do you get a login prompt? Is it just daemons that don't start?
