How/where can I get a visual desktop/tray indicator of whether my network is connected - similar to M$ system tray?

I have a little applet in the taskbar called, "Network Monitor" which does exactly what you're asking. I don't recall explicitly having downloaded and installed it either. It seems to have been there from the beginning. Anyway, I'm running Breezy and it's a Sony Vaio laptop.

Right-click on a blank part of your task bar, select "Add to panel..", scroll down and choose "Network Monitor". You may then need to configure it with a right-click to use the correct interface (eg eth0).
