I use socks and http proxies on windows but cannot figure out how to set this up on linux. I also need to be able to access files on my other computer. please help!

1. isn't there a graphical network setup app in the K Menu? 2. Read up on "Samba" (file sharing: linux and windows) 3. why not just install a distro instead of running off the cd...?

You can set your proxy settings in your browser, be it mozilla, firefox, konqueror etc....there are loads to choose from. Can you ping your windoze machines? You should be able to view your IP address with the command ifconfig. How far can you get when trying to access the net? For example can you ping www.google.com? Can you ping google via IP (216.239.59.99)?
