What distro are you using? If it's one that includes Xconfigurator (RedHat and Mandrake both include this), just type: Xconfigurator[enter] from the command prompt. You will then be walked through a series of menus that will let you pick your device settings. Good luck with Linux. It can be hard and tricky at first, but with persistance becomes much easier. Doug

Did you just install this? If you did you wouldn't be losing anything by reinstalling.

If you don't have Xconfigurator, try XF86Setup.

He said that his screen only flashes when he starts X. I took that to mean that he doesn't have it set to boot directly to X. Both Xconfigurator and XF86Setup are run from the command prompt, not X. He should be able to run them just fine. But, just to be sure, did you set it to boot X on statup Nathan? Doug

Even if you do boot in X. Most distributions are set up so that you can switch to a console screen by pressing ALT+F2 - F6.

Hello everyone,
It's the first time I'm visiting this site. Well, for the problem above, if the system boots into X, it's probably booting in runlevel 5. To avoid booting in X, type linux 3 at Lilo prompt to boot into runlevel 3. You may then configure your X server by typing the commands suggested by other people. When configurating the X server, it will try to start it at the end of the configuration. If the configuration is still not working and cannot leave the X server, you may kill the X server by pressing CTRL ALT Backspace together.
