I just installed Red Hat 6.1, and although I'm running a Celeron 500 w/ 64 megs of RAM, a dvdrom, cdrw, and a tremendous 17 gig HD, I'm sorry to say its a compaq. After hours of crash coursing my way to downloading rpm's, I finnaly got my on-board video to work for X in 24-bit 800X600. Now the big problem is...Getting my modem to work. I'm sorry to say my modem is a Conexant HCF V.90 Data Fax PCI 56k modem. I realize that this is a winmodem of sorts, but does anyone know of a way to get linux to use it?

Hello, glad to hear you've got Linux up and running - you don't have an i810 chipset do you? I had some fun getting that configured! The best source for modem info is www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html however, don't be too hopeful. Some internal ISA modems and very few PCI modems are supported, but you'll probably have to buy an external job. My Diamond SupraExpress 56e works very nicely. When connected (finally!) you may have problems opening apps. I dropped to 16 bit colour and everything now works very nicely. Hope this helps, Delboy:-)

Winmodem, remove it and throw it away, then go out and buy an ActionTec Call Waiting PCI modem, 56K, v.90. Linux is even mentioned on the front of the box, $80.

Agree on tossing the Winmodem! I use an external Jaton Explorer (about $60) and it works better in both Windows and Linux.
