I am looking to build a Linux (IPTables) firewall from scratch. I am going to use a mini-ITX board with a Compact Flash card as my IDE drive (I ordered a special adpater that allows a Compact Flash modules to be inserted into an IDE controller. My question is what actual sofware will I need to download (besides the Linux Kernel) in order to get a bootble OS on my Firewall box. In other words which pieces of software wil I need to compile in order to get a fully bootable and operational OS? I would also like to experiment with VPN (either with IPSEC or PPTP, but I will try that after I get the hang of the IPTables software. Also, how would I be able to make this Linux OS embedded? I am not very knowledgable with embedded applications. Just looking to learn more.

You should look at leaf.sourceforge.net
They have done extensive firewall router development that runs from a ram disk. There are details there for using a compact flash.
