I want to backup /home and /etc

I planned to use this
#####################

echo Full backup of /etc and
unmout /home
cd /
tar cpf /etc --label="full-backup created on `date '+%d-%B-%Y'`." \ --directory=/ect
cd /
tar cpf /home --label="full-backup created on `date '+%d-%B-%Y'`." \ --directory=/home --extrude=/home/descargas/* --exclude=/home/frodo/ldraw/*

#####################

do I need anything else?
I know I need to bzip de tar how do I do it?

I was told I should umnount /etc and /home
but as I can't unmount /ect I was think just to unmount /home and tar home and etc
but I'm still wondering do I really have to unmount /etc and /home to tar them?

GNU software RULES!!!!
