ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I searched for that file and could not locate it

ok i got that file by uninstalling/reinstalling the RPM but now its pointing to the /tmp/mysql.sock instead. i added a symlink so that it now points to it but now I cannot authenticate. i use the password that i created and it just fails. How can you reset the password for the root user in mysql or create another SU acct
