Comment:

HI I have Windows XP running on my Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 40 Gig HD. I also have a 6 Gig HD. I tried to multiboot Linux 7.2 onto my system. I installed linux on my second HD and chose Grub,Gnome, and Graphical when installing Linux. The problem is that when I try to boot into linux I do not get a graphical interface even though I specefied to use the graphical interface when I first installe linux. What I get is a dos like screen asking me for the login name and PW. Can someone please help. What can be causing this? Thaks from b4.

That's easy and has been answered many times before here in this forum. I assume when you say Linux 7.2 you mean RedHat Linux 7.2! Log in as root and edit (with any text editor that you like or know--vi or even pico!) /etc/inittab. Change the value from 3 to 5,

id:5:initdefault:

Save it and reboot your RedHat Linux. Now, you will see a GUI log-in screen...

When I checked it, it was already set to 5. Everything seems normal I can't understand why it won't boot into graphical mode.

I would go the opposite way of "taurus".
Set the value to "3" for
id:5:initdefault:
and then when you are logged in (in simple ascii mode) enter the command
startx
watch all the messages. I assume, that your choice for the graphics during installation was not correct. In checking the screen for this command, you can confirm this.
In this case you can try to edit XF86Config in /etc or /etc/X11 to match your HW.

There is also the possibility, that you can't get enough /tmp space.
check with
df -k .
