I have been using Grip to rip and encode some of my cds to my computer but the files have a .ogg ending to them. I look at the file properties and it says that has type Ogg Vorbis audio. Is this going to cause problems when I need to use the file on my Archos mp3 player? Is this still going to play under winamp?

winamp should be fine, not sure about your mp3 player.

In grip, you can change the type of encode from ogg to something like bladeenc or lame for mp3 files.

it won't play in your mp3 player... Ogg vorbis is a completely different format...
choose lame as the encoder, its the best for mp3 and leave the default lame flags alone, the default is the best configuration.
But for use on your computer, I recommend ogg, its much better than mp3 in the sense that a 128 kbps ogg vorbis will sound MUCH MUCH better than a 128 kbps mp3 (both will obviously be same size as its 128 kbps)
So in other words, if you encode a file in ogg vorbis 96 kbps, it will give similar quality to 128 kbps mp3 (the former will obviously be much smaller coz its 96 kbps)
Summary: In reference to the post about mp3, is ogg vorbis compression compatible with an mp3 player? If I burn ogg vorbis files to CD can I play them in a cd player or in windoze?? thanks ...

Summary: use an older version of xmms! the one which comes with RH 8.0 does not work with mp3 files, but works with Ogg Vorbis files. Believe it or not this was done on purpose! Andre G- ...
