OK After my install my refresh rates where maxed out at 85hz . I could key in ctrl+alt and +/- and that would change it back and forth between 75-85hz. On reboot it would always go back to 85hz. So I ran Xconfigurator and it would not detect my Video RAM so I had to manually config.. I shut down X by typing init 3 brfore running.
I could never get a 1024x768 display without it having a 85hz refresh rate. Now I cant toggle it back to 75hz which I would forget to do anyway. It autodetects everthing except my vidio ram.
I dont want to burn my monitor out by running at 85hz all the time and I dont want a 600x800 or any other size display.
Can someone please tell me how to set my Refresh rates to 75hz or at least to where I can toggle back and forth between refresh rates or display size ect..
Thanks for any Advise
Ron

as far as i know, monitor refresh rates have nothing to do with screen resolution. And the ram is seldom detected by the config program...

try xf86config, and enter every value manually, and also change the resolution setting for all modes (256 color, 16bit, 32bit) and not just the one you will use, that will give you with another screen to set the default resolution (i dunno, but i guess its a bug in xf86config)

which xfree?
what card?
what monitor?
Have you checked Hsync/Vsync settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4?

You should have
Modeline "1024x768" xxxxxxxxx
Modes "1024x768"
entries in XF86Config-4

I have checked /ect/X11/XF86Config-4 and it has Modlines for that resoultation about 100 times. My card is a GeForce II MX 400 with 128 mb ram .My monitor is a Sony Trinatron.I am at work now but I think the model number is ADH-240 its a 17" Flat CRT. Ihave tried Xconfigurator and xf86 -config when I try XFree86 Setup it says command not recognized.
My sync on my Moniter are 30-70 and 48-120

look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log
It should contain at least 1 entry under
Validated modes for Display Device 0, e.g.,
(**) NVIDIA(0): Mode "1280x1024": 110.0 MHz, 64.3 kHz, 61.0 Hz. There should also be
some default modes, possibly at lower resolution.
If there ar no validated modes, verify that the Hsync/Vsync entries in XF86Config-4 correspond to your previous post.
If so, you need to find alternate Modeline entries. I used a google search for this.

Thanks Dlonra, I will check that file tonight when I get home and if there arent any default modes with a lower refresh rate(Which there should be since I had 75hz option before) I will do a google search for some modelines that have a 75hz refresh rate with a1024x768 resoulution.
I tried a google search on refresh rates in linux and had little luck. Many hits just none I could make any sence out of.
I am very new to Linux 4 weeks in . I go to my First LUG meeting tonight.
Thanks Again
Ron

Hi, Balram and Dlonra, I got it figured out. I ran Xconfigurater and did a custom Sync rates and trimmed a percentage off of the top of both the H and V that I thought might work and I selected 2 different resoulutians.
I now have a 1024x768 with 75hz Refresh at bootup and can toogle to a 800x600 at 85 hz.
Thanks For Your alls Help and I hope this might help anyone else that has this problem as well. I learned a few things at the LUG meeting but none of them had any idea how to make the refresh rates the way I wanted them.
Thanks Again
Ron
