Hello,
I am trying to install a Rockwell HCF modem under Linux, but I get a NO
CARRIER message. I intensively researched the internet, but at this point, I am
making no progress. I hope you can help.
Thanks in advance,
SenaPs. I am not sure how I should configure the
Olitec driver HSF_PCI_56K_V2_K2.2.16.tar for Germany.

Perhaps you might do a little editing of that last grep next time.
I believe you took a look at this howto, since that is where you probably found the 2.2.16 Olitec driver.
Did you follow the instructions to place the indentification in the lin_hsf.inf file? Do you have a script that runs ./ins_all at boot (as root) or do you do it yourself? Did you read the subsection in the document entitled "5.4.4. When trying to dial my ISP I get "No Carrier" error" and follow its instructions/suggestions?
That is probably the best, most pertinent information you will find about the driver. Unfortunately, telephone networks are not entirely compatible for the average winmodem (and I am not intimiate with all the variations). Some things to try:
"S7=45"
Change this value (wherever it is) to about 60. V.90 will take a little time to connect (minimum a little over 30 seconds). If this timeout value is reached, you get the "NO CARRIER" return.
You can also try different X commands (I believe there is X0, X1, X3, X4). These manifest themselves in the dial command (ATX3DP for pulse and ATX3DT for tone, for example). These dial commands can return "NO CARRIER" if there is no dialtone detected or the line is busy (for some modems - do not know specifically about yours). X1, I think, will not bother with detecting if the line is busy or if there is a dialtone.

Thanks for your reply.
I did try S7=45 and the different X commands, but I still get the NO CARRIER message.
Well, the modem works under win 2x10^3.
I have got the driver from
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/Conexant+Rockwell-modem-HOWTO.html#HCF
I did put the identification in the lin_hsf.inf file. It now contains:lin_hsf.inf file:
[Generic]%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_2013&SUBSYS_201314F1
%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_2014&SUBSYS_201414F1
%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_2015&SUBSYS_201514F1
%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_2016&SUBSYS_201614F1
%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_127A&DEV_2014&SUBSYS_2014144E%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_127A&DEV_2004&SUBSYS_2004144E
%HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_127A&DEV_1025&SUBSYS_1025127A
HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_127A&DEV_1025&SUBSYS_1025127A...
I run ./ins_all myself.
I read the subsection in the document entitled "5.4.4.
When trying to dial my ISP I get "No Carrier" error" and
I did follow its instructions/suggestions. In wvdial I use ATX3 and ATX3DT
Are there any adjustments to be made in the lin_hsf.inf file in order to get the correct country? In this case, Germany
instead of USA?lin_hsf.inf file:

This is a strange driver. So I have read, it was intended for France's telephone network. The Linmodem-howto talks about this.
"lin_hsf.inf file:
[Country]
HKR, Country, Current, 1, B5,00"This may be the wrong country code. You might try 3. The USA is usally 1. But there are undoubtable other changes along these lines which I cannot direct you to make.
Successful users report that the device ID seems to be key.
This guy from Australia says he got his up and running. here. Honestly, it is fairly bad news when a Linux howto tells you "[this driver] will... probably not work for you."
That said, the Conexant website has Windows drivers availible with some generic installation HKR lines. I downloaded a Windows driver and checked the genHCF file.
Remember you can pay $15 and get the driver for the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels here. 2.2 probably works and you can test it with the sample driver for 14.4kbps.

Meanwhile I have checked the HKR lines from the win genHCF, since the modem works under win.
I also found an Italian page addressing the country configuration: http://utenti.lycos.it/SourceNet/hcfmodem.htmThat guy from Australia has an HSF chipset. I have a HCF, and several users reported that this driver also worked for the HCF chipset. I will try his init strings.
I will follow your advice and check the HKR lines from conexant.
I will try all these things, and I will let you know about the results.
Thanks for keeping in touch.
